Description

Heinz Ad 1938 MarchBlack and white 9 1/2″ x 13 1/2″ ad for Heinz Fresh Cucumber Pickle. This ad begins with the claim that this was “The Taste America Couldn’t Forget” and has five different illustrations trying to make its point. In the lower, left-hand side the picture shows an elderly lady tasting something very delicious and the text says that “When grandmother first tasted Heniz Fresh Cucumber Pickle, she exclaimed the jade-green slices were just like hers. And so they are! Only, Heinz chefs use a special strain of pedigreed cucumber, Heinz pure distilled White Vinegar, and seasonings imported from the orient by Heinz own spice-bottlers. Keep a big jar of Heinz Fresh Cucumber Pickle in the pantry, and let the snack-snatchers in your family eat their fill. These crisp, crunchy slices are as good for them as a green salad”. Additionally, there are drawings of a man eating from a bowl of salad with the first sentence saying that Cherished Childhood Memories come back as you taste the piquant goodness of Heinz Fresh Cucumber Pickle, a picture of a note from Thomas Jefferson with the first sentence saying that Great Gourmet of his day, Thomas Jefferson wrote this tribute to the mild and mellow spiced pickle he liked so much”, a drawing showing a bowl of sliced pickles with the first sentence claiming that Pickle Dishes Appear again on smart tables” and another drawing showing the grandmother working in the kitchen with the first sentence being Pantry Pirates of long ago – grandma and grandson – plundering the earthenware crock on the whitewashed shelf under the cellar stairs”.
