Description

Carnation Ad 1954Full color 10″ x 13″ ad for Carnation Evaporated Milk which, according to the ad, Carnation is the Secret of Failure-Proof Gravy”. There is a drawing of a big meal, plenty of plates, and a female hand is pouring gravy over some potatoes that are sitting next to some meat and, what looks like, fried apples. The headline under the picture says that “Special quantities of Carnation make it blend better than ordinary milk and result in smoother, tastier gravy every time…without fail”. There is a simple, two-photo recipe for Failure-Proof Gravy. It consists of blend 1/4 cup seasoned flour with 1/4 cup of roast meat drippings, they claim that pork and ham are delicious, in a heavy skillet over low heat until smooth. Then you will gradually add a mixture of a large can of Carnation and 1 2/3 cups of water. Stir until the gravy is thickened.
