Ralston Ad 1940 OctoberThree color 5 1/4″ x 13 1/2″ ad for Shredded Ralston Cereal. This ad is a series of four cartoon strips that begin after the headline which states that “Dumb Dora Knows What It Takes To Make Youy FEEL LIKE A MILLION. She’s Not So Dumb”. In the first one she has come home from the store and her husband is riding a mechanical drum and, she says “Rod!! What on earth have you bought now?” to which he replies, very shakily, “A mechanical horse guaranteed to give me a breakfast appetite”. On the second one, Rod is standing there, legs spread and hollering “Ooohh Dora” and the child shouts “Mommy! Daddy needs something”. In number three, Dora is preparing Shredded Ralston on the stove while Rod is sitting, in misery, on a chair. Dora claims “He needs Shredded Ralston! It’s so good he won’t have to coax an appetite” and their dog, yes, dogs can talk too, says “It’s bite size, too”. In picture number four, marked Later, Rod, eating away at the table, says “Dora, you’re not so dumb. This whole wheat cereal really hits the spot! And I feel like a million dollars since I’ve been eating Shredded Ralston to which Dora answers “My mother always said ‘Whole wheat every day helps keep the doctor away”. The kid, pausing between mouthfuls, says “Gee! Shredded Ralston tastes yummy”. At the bottom of this ad, we see Dora again, this time saying “Now a cereal so new, so different, it’s guaranteed to Please or your money back!”.
